Ernest Barthélemy Lem (Thelem)
Cycles Peugeot Valentigney ( Doubs ) Circa 1900 - Original Poster - Art Nouveau

Circa 1900

About the Item

Very beautiful poster of Thelem (Ernest BARTHÉLEMY LEM, 1869-1930) for the Peugeot cycles. The Peugeot family began its rise to industrial power with the discovery of iron in the Doubs valley in eastern France. Initially, it produced tools. In 1885, it began manufacturing bicycles, then motorcycles and finally automobiles. This poster clearly positions Peugeot as the brand of the aristocrats and the wealthy. Here, on the immaculate grounds of a stately home, women are playing a game of lawn tennis. A dashing young man on his motorcycle lures one of the women away from the game to come and flirt. Associating wealth, style, status and sex appeal with motorcycles is a powerful advertising concept that continues to this day. Printed by : G. Elleaume in Paris

  • 1894 Eugène Grasset’s Art Nouveau poster - Sarah Bernhardt - Jeanne d'Arc
    By Eugène Grasset
    Located in PARIS, FR
Eugène Grasset’s medieval-inspired Art Nouveau poster, commissioned by Sarah Bernhardt to promote her 1894 role as Joan of Arc in Jules Barbier’s Jeanne d'Arc. Grasset portrays Bernhardt in the spirit of her historic role: standing bravely with a flowing flag embellished with fleur-de-lis amidst an onslaught of arrows and spears. This antique lithograph is the only color small-format edition of the original poster design, from an extremely rare folio published in conjunction with a landmark exhibition of poster design in St. Petersburg in 1897. This poster design for Jeanne d’Arc is especially important as being the collaboration that led Sarah Bernhardt to discover Alphonse Mucha, as she wanted a new artist...

  • Circa 1900 Original poster for the Tillier dance Troup at the Palais de Glace
    Located in PARIS, FR
The girl who has entered the theatrical profession as a child can be depended upon to lead a clean life when she grows up. She is far, far safer than the girl who enters the profession after childhood.' So wrote John Tiller, whose theatrical school produced the dancing ladies who starred in the original 'Pony Ballet' and whose troupes of 'Tiller Girls' were in great demand for shows not only in London but in Paris, Amsterdam, Turin, and New York. He and Mrs. Tiller began training youngsters at the age of nine. In the schools in London and Manchester, the girls had regular academic studies as well as dancing and were placed in Christmas pantomimes when still children. When they grew up, they were given jobs in various Tiller troupes (each managed by a mature woman who watched out for them)... [This lithograph]... was intended for all of the Tiller Troupe performances. The black type at the bottom was surprinted later to indicate, in this instance, their appearance at the Palais de Glace...
