Giuseppe Bartolomeo Chiari Art
Italian, 1654-1727
Giuseppe Bartolomeo Chiari (Rome, 10 March 1654 - Rome, 8 September 1727) was an Italian painter.
Favorite pupil of Carlo Maratta, he was one of the most characteristic artists of early 18th century Rome. In the third decade of the century his prestige led him to assume the position of prince of the Academy of San Luca. He worked in Palazzo Barberini (it was Giovan Pietro Bellori who suggested that he take inspiration from the famous Aurora by Guido Reni in the Pallavicini casino), in Palazzo Colonna, in San Silvestro in Capite, in Palazzo Spada. One of his best works is the Adoration of the Magi at the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.
Chiari reached the pinnacle of fame during the pontificate of Clement XI (1700 - 1721): in those years he was joined by the master Carlo Maratta in the preparation of the cartoons for the mosaics of the side naves of St. Peter's Basilica, he was commissioned the oval with the prophet Obadiah for S. Giovanni in Laterano and was commissioned to paint the Glory of San Clemente for the basilica of the same name.
An academic artist of good quality, Chiari often used motifs taken from the major exoponents of seventeenth-century classicism, such as Andrea Sacchi, Guido Reni, Carlo Maratta, not disdaining some masters of the Baroque, first of all Pietro da Cortona.to

Madonna and Child with St Catherine and Putti - Italian 17thC art oil painting

Painted circa 1684 it is a large and vibrant oil painting of the Madonna and child. To their left is Saint Catherine and to their right four putti or cherubs look upon a sleeping Jesus. The detail in all the figures faces and hair and the colouring is just superb, especially the Madonna's sumptuous blue robe. Giuseppe Bartolomeo Chiari (1654-1727), also known simply as Giuseppe Chiari, was an Italian painter of the late-Baroque period, active mostly in Rome. Born in Rome, he was one of the main assistants, along with Giuseppe Passeri and Andrea Procaccini, in the studio of an elder Carlo Maratta. His father had opposed the career, but his mother, on the recommendation of a painter named Carlo Antonio Gagliani. By the age of 22, he had frescoed the lateral lunettes (Birth of Virgin and Adoration of Magi...

This present picture is a good quality copy of a Reynolds original. Copies are notoriously
difficult to date, but judging by the style and the materials used it is most probable that we are
dealing with a picture painted between 1890 and 1920. The professional standard of the work
makes this painting a fine and substantial piece of decoration in the 18th century English
manner. But in this case there is more…
The Reynolds original was painted around 1774-6 and depicts Harriet Boone, wife of Charles
Boone with their daughter, also Harriet – later the wife of Sir William Drummond K.C. This
picture was by 1865 in the collection of one T Colleton Garth (a relative of the younger
Harriet Boone), who lent it to an exhibition of Old Master pictures at the British Institution in
1865. It was engraved in 1866 by G.H. Emery – presumably after attracting some attention at
that exhibition. The painting was then bought from Garth by the dealers Agnew in 1903 and
sold the following year in 1904 to the famous Anglo-German diamond magnate Alfred Beit.
Two years later in 1906, Beit - who would fill his later years with numerous philanthropic
donations in Germany, England and South Africa - gave the Reynolds original of Mrs Boone
to the Berlin Gallery...

Mary married Henry Wriothesley, 2nd Earl of Southampton who gave birth to Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton - one of the great figures in Shakespears"s circle and founder of the Virginia company, developers of Virginia USA.
Henry Wriothesley, born 6 October 1573 at Cowdray House, Sussex, was the only son of Henry Wriothesley, 2nd Earl of Southampton, by Mary Browne, the only daughter of Anthony Browne, 1st Viscount Montague, and his first wife, Jane Radcliffe.[5] He had two sisters, Jane, who died before 1573, and Mary (c. 1567 – 1607), who in June 1585 married Thomas Arundell, 1st Baron Arundell of Wardour.[6]
After his father's death, Southampton's mother married firstly, on 2 May 1595, as his second wife, Sir Thomas Heneage (d. 17 October 1595), Vice-Chamberlain of the Household, and secondly, between 5 November 1598 and 31 January 1599, Sir William Hervey. She died in November 1607.[7]
Early life
When his father died on 4 October 1581 Southampton inherited the earldom and landed income valued at £1097 6s per annum. His wardship and marriage were sold by the Queen to her kinsman, Charles, Lord Howard of Effingham, for £1000. According to Akrigg, Howard then "entered into some further agreement, of which no documentation can now be found, which transferred to Lord Burghley personally the custody and marriage of the young Earl, but left Howard holding his lands", and late in 1581 or early in 1582 Southampton, then eight years of age, came to live at Cecil House in the Strand.[8]
In October 1585, at age twelve, Southampton entered St John's College, Cambridge,[9] graduating M.A. on 6 June 1589.[10] His name was entered at the Gray's Inn legal society before he left the university, and he was admitted on 29 February 1588.[11]
On Southampton's 16th birthday, 6 October 1589, Lord Burghley noted Southampton's age in his diary, and by 1590 Burghley was negotiating with Southampton's grandfather, Anthony Browne, 1st Viscount Montague, and Southampton's mother, Mary, for a marriage between Southampton and Lord Burghley's eldest granddaughter, Elizabeth Vere, daughter of Burghley's daughter, Anne Cecil, and Edward de Vere...
