One of the most respected names in American watch making, was the house founded by Edward Howard in Boston Massachusetts in 1858. Howard was an exceptional watchmaker who had worked originally for the Willard Clock Company. Willard was the premier American clock maker and advanced American horology. Howard’s exceptional designs and innovations helped establish America as a watchmaking capital along with the Waltham Watch Company. Howard’s creativity helped establish the principles of industrialization and standardized parts. Howards watches were rugged and very accurate as well. Their case designs were innovative as well. Howard watches were used by scientists and engineers in military and industry because they were rugged and dependable.
In 1903, the Howard Watch Company was acquired by the Keystone Watch Case Company. Keystone continued to produce Howard watches under the Howard brand name until 1935. By that time the great depression had taken its toll on all but the most robust watch companies. During the 1920’s Howard produced the 12-size caliber which was a beautifully finished watch that kept exceptional time. It was also one of the few American watches that met most of the standards of what is called a “Geneva Seal...

Questions About Howard Jewelry
- What is a Howard sofa?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022A Howard sofa is characterized by its slightly curved sprung back, low level arms and a deep seat designed for comfort. It has been described as a timeless British classic. Shop a collection of authentic Howard sofas from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 22, 2024Howard chairs are so expensive largely due to their quality. The British furniture maker produces each piece to order using carefully selected upholstery, wood and padding. Skilled artisans painstakingly perform much of the manufacturing by hand, adding to the cost of pieces. Plus, demand for the furniture tends to be high, which also drives up the selling price. Shop a collection of Howard & Sons chairs on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022How to open a Howard pocket watch depends on its design. However, experts recommend that you don't attempt to open one yourself. Instead, take the piece to a watch repair center that has experience servicing pocket watches. Doing so will help you avoid damaging the timepiece. On 1stDibs, find a collection of Howard pocket watches.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022How a Howard Miller clock works depends on the type of clock. Ones that feature pendulums harness the energy created by the swinging to drive their movements. Others feature wind-up mechanisms or use batteries for power. Shop a range of Howard Miller clocks on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022Yes, all Howard and Sons chairs are stamped. However, the type and location of the stamp varies. You may see a name or number on a caster wheel or foot on some pieces. Others display the stamp on a paper label sewn onto the fabric. On 1stDibs, shop a variety of expertly vetted Howard and Sons chairs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022To identify whether a clock is an authentic Howard Miller piece, look for the foil label located on the back of the clock, the inside of the case behind the working parts or on the side of the inside case. The label will feature a model number and serial number. The labels of older Howard Miller Clocks may be printed with “Made in Germany.” On 1stDibs, shop a selection of Howard Miller clocks from trusted sellers worldwide.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022To spot an authentic Howard & Sons chair, first look for a name or number on the inside of the back foot. There may also be a paper label sewn into the hessian or a name stamp on the wheel. On 1stDibs, you can shop a collection of expertly vetted Howard & Sons chairs from some of the world’s top sellers.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Howard Miller grandfather clocks can be identified by a label located on the back of the clock, or inside of the front door or the inside of the back panel behind the movement. Older models may have “Made in Germany” on the label. Find a variety of authentic Howard Miller grandfather clocks on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022Whether or not Howard Miller clocks are made in the USA depends on the timepiece and collection. Generally, floor clocks and grandfather clocks that feature mechanical and key-wound mechanisms come from factories in the U.S. The brand produces other clocks in China and Southeast Asia. You'll find a selection of Howard Miller clocks on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 5, 2024To determine the value of a Howard Miller grandfather clock, look for the serial number and check trusted online resources and auction houses to see the sales prices of pieces of similar age and style. This should at least help provide an estimate with respect to how much your item is worth. Keep in mind that the age, rarity and condition of any antique or vintage clock will also impact its value.
Your Howard Miller clock may have a label that is affixed to the back of the clock or is tucked inside the case on the back or side. The clock's model and serial number will appear on this label. If you're able to hunt down and consult vintage trade catalogs, these numbers will be of help in identifying the clock.
If the original parts of your Howard Miller grandfather clock have been replaced or repaired, this will also be a factor in determining its value. Because there is a range of aspects that can affect the value of your grandfather clock or any other antique, it's typically a good idea to have a certified appraiser or experienced antiques dealer evaluate a clock. An expert can properly assess the condition of your clock and likely give you a clear picture of how much it's worth.
On 1stDibs, shop a variety of vintage Howard Miller grandfather clocks, wall clocks and table clocks.
