French Empire clock showing Louis XVI dressed as Caesar

About the Item

An early French Empire mantel clock depicting Louis XVI dressed as Caesar. The entirely fire gilt case depicts a standing figure of Louis XVI dressed as a Roman emperor (Caesar), holding a scroll in his outstretched right arm over the plinth which houses the movement. On top of the plinth is a wreath and a plumed helmet. The lower rectangular clock base has a frieze in high relief depicting a battle scene. The clock has its original eight day silk string suspension movement ringing the hours and halves on a bell, the white enamel dial with roman numerals.
