Large Charles X Period Gilt Bronze and Malachite Clock
About the Item
Large Charles X period gilt bronze and malachite clock
French, circa 1830
Measures: Height 62cm, width 54cm, depth 20cm
This fine mantel clock is a superb example of the Charles X style. The clock, wrought from malachite and gilt bronze, features the distinctive feature of most Charles X period clocks: a large sculptural surmount. In the present clock, the sculptural surmount depicts Paris and Helen of Troy, central figures in Greek legend. Beneath the chair upon which Helen is seated is the clock drum, inset with a circular gilt bronze dial. The entire group is supported by a stepped malachite base mounted with a variety of classicising gilt bronze mounts, including a classical mask and acanthus scrolls.
