Neoclassical Style Gilt Bronze Cartel Cartel Clock with Lyre-Shaped Back Plate

About the Item

This elegant Cartel clock is decorated the refined neoclassical style. The wall clock features an unusual lyre shaped back plate and a double headed eagle surmount crowned by an ornate bow. The dial has both Roman and Arabic numerals and is surrounded by a foliate garland with roses in the lower part. The work is significant for the level of detailing that it is decorated with, demonstrating the very high quality of craftsmanship and skill that was responsible for its production. The neoclassical style originated in mid-18th century France and Britain, where it dominated the decorative arts until the influential Empire style of the early 19th century. Neoclassical forms were inspired by the Classical art and architecture of ancient Greece and Rome, which was considered to embody the perfection of harmonious forms. In particular, vases became immensely popular in the late 18th century, as they represented the ultimate symbol of the ancient world.

The gilt bronze surrounding the dial is richly moulded with scrolled forms and grasping acanthus leaves.
