Art Sculpture Mixed-Media "Bidonville view" by Arne Quinze, 2011

About the Item

Bidonvilles expand further on the study of livability in today's context. Different skyscrapers and dwellings embody diverse forms and shapes but they are still inherent to the same architectural context. Bidonvilles are archetypical houses as a parody on the way people live now. Cities are developing with inexhaustible fervor. Without thought or a vision of sustainability, houses are rapidly built one next to another; the functionality of the buildings, streets, and parks in total in the urban settings are not fully considered. Bidonvilles tranquilize or accelerate this process intentionally and provoke open communication in a society of human interaction. The linking of diverse societies in this way aligns with Quinze's belief that all individuals are equal. Cultural and monetary differences between people do not alter this equality nor lessen our basic sameness. Quinze's constructions are both shantytown and industrialized skyscraper. Distinct cultures are represented by different lines and rhythms, and yet are unified within the same structure, reflecting our daily lives around and with each other. All his Bidonville towers seem to incorporate the same shape and similar construction yet, upon closer look, they are marked with differing details according to the culture, continent, or city in which they are built. For these works, Quinze drew inspiration from the ubiquitous favellas of Brazil, those shantytowns competing with skyscrapers and with no lateral space available for growth. The only place for buildings to go is up; social gravity pushes the social mass up into the sky. The air, once considered the sovereign district of the wealthy, has undergone a shift in the balance of power. To look at a Bidonville? – a vertical outgrowth of suppressed building blocks – ?is to experience the transparency of people living together and interacting in what was once an individualistic society. Arne Quinze was born in 1971 in Belgium and lives and works in Sint- Martens-Latem, Belgium and Shanghai, China. Quinze creates sculptures, drawings, paintings, and large- scale installations. Natural Chaos strength lies in the challenge to bring its viewer back to an unspoiled confrontation. Like the experience often conceived by the powerful beauty found in nature. Leaving you completely dazed by its force. Opening up its viewers perception and making place for a new and fresh reflection. Arne Quinze strives to intervene in the daily lives of passer-by. This urge to provoke a dialog in modern society arises from the artists continuously research of differences between cultures. His curiosity to discover the unknown in nature, urbanism and societyes reflects its energy into the composition of the Natural Chaos sculptures. Striving to absolute beauty, balance, coherence.

  • Belgian art and design, Michel Martens Postmodern Glass Sculpture
    By Michel Martens
    Located in Antwerp, BE
Belgium; 1970's; Glass sculpture; Postmodern art; Michel Martens, a large glass sculpture with several punctuation marks, colored, frosted, and sandblasted glass. Signed by the artist on the bottom right corner. Belgium artist Michel Martens is famous for his impressive glass art. He created this postmodern piece of art in the 1970s. Martens (1921-2006) was a respected designer of stained glass windows and had an impressive career creating stained glass windows for churches. His credo was 'light is my material, glass my medium'. Martens was an autodidact and first taught himself the technique of stained windows. He designed an impressive 7000 meters stained glass between 1947 and 1989 for churches and monasteries. From 1968 onwards, Martens started to lose the church as a main client and therefore started to develop a practice in which he worked with mirrors that were also suitable for the private sector and private homes. With his radical and modern approach to glass art, Martens became part of the Post-war Abstract Modernist movement. Using mirrored glass opened up new perspectives for Martens. He even started using industrial glass as well, for his so-called 'Crazy Mirrors...

  • Japanese Woven Bamboo Sculpture by Honda Syoryu
    By Honda Shoryu
    Located in Atlanta, GA
Entitled "Rhythm", this abstract sculpture was made by Japanese bamboo artist Honda Syoryu (Japanese, born 1951) in 2005. The free vertical form defies the limit of the traditional material bamboo as a rigid medium, and instead displays a nearly impossibly fluidity. Rooted in ages of tradition of Japanese basket weaving, the artist managed to break that ikebana tradition using bending and twisting techniques to create a pure sculptural work. The work is a testament of how traditional craft can be reinvented into modern art form. Signed with carved signature "Syoryu" underneath. The sculpture is displayed on a custom-made stand and can be appreciated from all angles. It comes with its original box and cloth, with label and Japanese inscription as shown. Provenance: Purchased in 2005 from Tai Modern...
