Matte Black Ceramic TOTEM, Round and Rectangular Forms, Organic Crinkled Cup Top
About the Item
One in a new series of modern TOTEMS consisting of soft round or rectangular forms on small conical feet. The shapes begin as a solid piece. They are then hollowed out, stacked and in this case, coated in a brown/black clay slip. The top of this one is a roughly formed organic cup shape, pinched and pressed to show the work of the artist's hand, and to ensure its uniqueness.
The slip is applied by brush and the pieces are fired twice. This slip creates a matte surface with tiny silver specks and dark brown tones, catching light and creating depth. In different light it looks chocolate brown more than black.
Strong and majestic on its own, wonderful as an installation with several other sculptures.
Completely hand built by artist Helena Starcevic.
Signed with artist's signature chop underneath.

Helena Starcevic Ceramics
Helena Starcevic Ceramics produces work that straddles the line between fine and decorative art. Each piece is one of a kind, hand-built entirely by the artist in her New York studio. Taking inspiration from the natural world, Ms. Starcevic's work includes references to the stark beauty of the desert, prehistoric cave paintings, and the human form (within and without). Everything is filtered through Ms. Starcevic’s own singular aesthetic, at once quiet yet strong, meditative, and beautiful. Pieces are made in different clays and finishes, and at different scales. Groupings are available. Helena Starcevic’s ceramic pieces are held in private collections across the US and Europe. She has held numerous residencies including one at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City.
