About the Item

A wonderful 1950s abstract fibreglass sculpture by Ron Hitchins in Verdigris finish, mounted on wooden stand with carved initials "RH" This piece was from his private estate and was onne of his own pieces from his Hackney home. Provenance: The sculpture remained in the artists Hackney home, where he lived most of his life, until his death in 2019 at the age of 93 - see attached photo of the sculpture in the living room. Ron Hitchins was a prolific artist working in numerous mediums including fibreglass, terracotta and drawings. A selection of important pieces are to be exhibited and are in the London Victoria & Albert museum private collection. He has sold at Christie’s and Bonham’s amongst others and his work has appeared in the BBC’s ‘Antiques Roadshow’ and been featured in Magazines and newspapers. Born in the 1920s in London, Ron Hitchins moved to Hackney aged 13 and started a market stall on the infamous Ridley Road, He was known as ‘The Flash’ he was a colourful character in London’s East end. He started to design small terracotta necklaces with interesting abstract designs that he sold on his stall. From this a developed a career as an artist. His designs were often inspired by foreign design influences, notably Aztec. He made some large beautiful sculptural pieces, most of which hung all over his house, both inside and out. He also worked with terracotta and made small 2" individual tiles and fried them in a small kiln in his basement, so each one is totally unique and a one off with no two tiles are the same design.
