The bronze with excellent hand chased surface detail and Fine rich black/brown patination. Raised on an integral naturalistic base, signed P J Mêne. An exceptionally fine early example of one of the artist's most popular subjects from his own foundry Pierre-Jules Mêne, French, 1810-1879, was born in Paris, the son of a prosperous metal-turner. His father trained him in metal-working techniques and he quickly put them together with his own natural talent for drawing and began creating small sculptures. Mêne rapidly became one the most successful and popular animalier of his time. Examples of Mêne's work reside in venues around the world, including museums such as the Ashmolean, the Louvre, the Metropolitan, and the R.W. Norton Art Gallery.
