An extremely rare, beautiful and important early 19th century relief of Medusa Rondanini, made in Italy with Carrara Marble. Previously owned by a noble family in Germany. Item in very good condition.
This is the most beautiful relief of Medusa Rondanini ever made in our mind.
Auction record : Sotheby's, London, UK. Princely Sale, April 14th, 2011. Sale L11309, Lot 0271

Original catalogue note from Sotheby's:
"The antique Medusa Rondanini is so called because it was housed in the Palazzo Rondanini in the eighteenth century. It was spotted there in 1786 by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe who wrote about it that 'the mere knowledge that such a work could be created and still exists in the world makes me twice the person I was.' Encouraged by this praise, King Ludwig of Bavaria purchased the Medusa for his collection. It is preserved in the Munich Glyptothek."
