Pair of French Two-Handed Gilt-Metal Cobalt-Blue and Clear Crystal Faceted Vases

About the Item

A pair of French gilt-metal clear crystal vases with cobalt-blue overlay from the mid-20th century. Each piece presents a waisted body over a swollen base atop a short baluster-shaped connector resting on a square pedestal. A beautiful cobalt-blue overlay covers the vases, faceted away to reveal the clear crystal beneath. Two gilt-metal scrolling foliate handles join the equally gilt everted lip, embossed with an egg-and-dart frieze, to the waisted upper part of the vase. The square clear crystal base is adorned with a cut star pattern and framed within an embossed socle resting on paw feet. This pair of French two-handed gilt-metal clear crystal vases from the mid-20th century, with their cobalt-blue overlay amazingly enhanced by the gilt metal decoration and elegant waisted shape, could be a fabulous addition to a collection, placed prominently on each end of a sideboard or a mantlepiece.

A pair of Japanese underglaze blue and white porcelain baluster vases from the late 19th century painted with shaped panels of flowers, insects and birds. Another shaped panel presents two charming birds on a branch painted by a free, fluid hand with shading and brushstrokes. Watery blue peonies, auspicious symbols of springtime and prosperity, emerge from a dense cobalt blue background of tight arabesques motifs arranged in a most delicate composition. The lip of the vase presents a thunder pattern frieze, symbol of life, and a mark on the bottom. This pair of Japanese blue and white porcelain vases...
