Pair of Japanese Fukagawa Koransha Blue Porcelain Vases, circa 1880

About the Item

Japanese very large Meiji Fukagawa/Koransha signed porcelain Vases (circa 1880,) intricately hand-painted in cobalt blue underglaze, and green and red, on a stunningly shaped baluster body in pure white which is the characteristic of Imari-Arita porcelain. The mark, the combination of Fukagawa sei (made by Fukagawa) and the orchid in red signifies that this pair was produced by Fukagawa/Koransha company. Koransha means scented orchid. Koransha company was founded by Ezaiemon Fukagawa in 1875 to create exceptional porcelain decorative pieces and tableware for export. This rare mark indicates that this pair was created between 1875 and 1880, when Fukagawa Eizaemon left Koransha company. The late father of the collector of this exquisite pair, who operated one of the leading kilns in Imari-Arita region of Japan, travelled extensively to Europe in the early 1960s with a mission that he led, to purchase and bring back to Japan antique ceramics that had been exported from Japan to the west over the past 250 years. A total of 104 pieces were acquired and brought back. These were very unique pieces, designed and produced to export to Europe and later to America too, mostly in the 18th up to very early 20th century. These were carefully studied and extensively copied in the hope of creating products that conformed with the long-standing tastes and preferences in the west and bringing back the glory of that era. He concentrated on purchasing massive masterpieces that originated from his region of Imari-Arita. Records show that the mission did a considerable portion of its buying in London. All the 104 pieces have been in his museum quality private collection. This pair of Meiji porcelain vases is among these 104 exceptional and unique pieces. These superb rare porcelain vases showcase old cherry trees in graceful shapes with cherry blossoms in full bloom, in cobalt blue underglaze reaching out to touch the top of the vases. Bold peonies in orange and white and spring flower and foliage in green, orange and white decorate the body of the vases and birds resting on the cherry tree branches and in flight enjoy this breathtaking scenery. A band in red and puple outlined in cobalt blue with a beautiful pattern decorates the base, while a stunning complicated pattern in turquoise, red and green with cobalt blue outline adorns the elegant neck and inner rim, to create a mesmerizing contrast.
