Charles Ahrenfeldt Limoges Gilt Encrusted Hand-Painted Cabinet Plates, Set of 12

About the Item

This outstanding set of Limoges porcelain cabinet plates was made and decorated by the Charles Ahrenfeldt porcelain factory and studio in Limoges, France. The center of each plate features a hand-painted polychrome floral grouping on a white ground signed by Ahrenfeldt decorator Mireille. The floral groupings are encircled by embossed gold gilt bands which give way to a robin's egg blue ground. The blue grounds themselves bear an abstract tracery pattern with a coral motif. The plates have gilt encrusted bands at the rim decorated with embossed scrolls and stylized flowers. The foot rims have also been gilded. The plates are free of chips and cracks and show little to no sign of use. The back of the pieces bear the green Charles J. Ahrenfeldt conjoined CA France Depose factory mark along with a green C. Ahrenfeldt Limoges decorating mark. The plates also carry a stamp for Fine jeweler and importer J. B. Hudson and Son of Minneapolis, founded in 1885. A striking set in fine condition.

  • 19th Century Minton’s Art Pottery Studio Kensington Gore Hand-Painted Charger
    By Minton
    Located in Cincinnati, OH
This large hand-painted charger was made by Mintons Art Pottery Studio of Kensington Gore, London. The studio traces its origins to the renowned earthenware and fine bone china factory Minton, located in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire England. Colin Minton Campbell, descendant of founder Thomas Minton, took over company management in 1858 and went on to establish Mintons Art Pottery Studio in 1871 for the purpose of hand decorating pottery and tiles. The studio initially operated under the direction of painter and book illustrator William Stephen Coleman and drew upon the talents of artists studying at the Kensington's National Art Training School, now known as the Royal College of Art, as well as those of well-regarded Continental artists. The company was short lived as it was destroyed by an accidental fire in 1875 and was not rebuilt. This large earthenware charger has been hand-painted in polychrome enamel and depicts two young children at play in the nursery. The scene includes multiple colors and textures and features a cherubic toddler seated upon a bed alongside a young girl standing on a blue footstool...

  • Wright & Davies Sterling Silver Box Hand Painted Enamel Plaque with Genre Scene
    By Wright & Davies 1
    Located in Cincinnati, OH
This fabulous rectangular sterling silver box was made in 1887 by English silversmiths William Thomas Wright and Frederick Davies and has been fitted with a hand painted enamel plaque on the lid that features a genre scene. The delightful image is set within an elegantly appointed salon and depicts an artist seated in front of a gilt-framed canvas that bears a partially completed portrait of a baby. The painter is surrounded by an entourage of sumptuously attired women who are attempting to capture the baby's attention and direct it toward the artist. The lid opens with a tapering tab at the front. The child's nurse holds her charge upright on a table that is covered by an ornate embroidered cloth trimmed in fringe. A lady dressed in purple stands next to her and leans toward the child in an attempt to cajole the baby into cooperating with the task at hand. The artist is seated opposite the child on an upholstered bench and holds his paintbrush in his right hand while simultaneously pointing up to a cluster of fruit. The fruit cluster is dangled by a lady dressed in a patterned yellow gown who wears a bemused expression on her face as she attempts to focus the baby's attention. Another woman dressed in blue and pink is seated in a green upholstered chair...
