German Silver Hound Stirrup Cup by J. D. Schleissner & Söhne Retailed by Dior

About the Item

A rare German 830 silver hound headed stirrup cup by J. D. Schleissner & sons with a Christian Dior retailer mark. A finely chased stirrup cup of good weight in very good condition, by J. D. Schleissner & Söhne in Hanau probably in the late 19th/early 20th century - then presumably retailed by the Christian Dior Home department in the 1950s-60s. Very tactile to hold, a rare example of a silver stirrup cup The Silver mark with the sickle was used by the goldsmiths J.D. Schleissner and sons. This was a goldsmiths' company founded in Hanau Germany in 1817. The founder, Johann Christian Daniel Schleissner (1793-1862), came from a family of Augsburg goldsmiths. His son, Daniel Philipp August (1825-1892), specialised in silver objects in a historicising style, exhibiting at many international exhibitions in the 1870s including the 1893 Chicago world's fair. He sometimes used earlier goldsmiths' stamps to mark his creations, although these were considered 'fantasy pieces', 'Phantasieartikels', not necessarily intended to deceive (Thiele, 1992).
