About the Item

Wooden tribal statue from West Nepal, mid-20th century. Steel plate base. This wooden figure comes from West Nepal, most likely from the area of the Karnali river system. He wears a green topi or hat in the shape of the crescent moon and has an old Nepali coin as a tika on his forehead. The naturalistic carving plays off the beautiful textural patterning of the wood to produce gentle features and a highly emotive piece. The hands are in the traditional Nepali posture of Namaste used in greeting and as a sign of respect. He greets, he shows respect, he bids farewell. This figure would have been placed in a shrine or shrine room in or near the village to be approached and honored on specific days. There is a nail hammered into the shoulder of this statue, and signs where others may well have been set. This would have been to hold fabrics, flags or flowers; or other objects which would have been hung as offerings or as signs of respect. Condition: The piece is in very good, and structurally sound, condition. General features are particularly well preserved. There is an area on the back lower right where there has been some erosion of the wood, but this is now stabile. A couple of other spots show old erosion around knots in the wood. And as mentioned there are several places that indicate where nails were set into the figure, all but one since removed. There are traces of original green color in several places. Dimensions: figure itself - 10.5 inches wide by 6 inches deep by 30 inches tall. Measures: Stand 10 inches wide x 10 inches deep. Overall 10.5 inches wide by 10 inches deep by 31.5 inches tall.

Wear consistent with age and use. The piece is in very good, and structurally sound, condition. General features are particularly well preserved. There is an area of erosion on the back lower right, and signs of old erosion around knots in the wood. A few nail holes can also be seen.
