About the Item
This classic 1930s chrome and opaque glass ceiling light is an iconic Bauhaus / Modernist light - the Ultralux U14 - designed by English designer, A.B Read for Troughton & Young (Lighting) Ltd of Knightsbridge, London. Comprising of an original chromed steel ceiling rose, central shaft, vented dust cover and a white opaque glass ball shade.
Alfred Burgess Read's interest in Walter Gropius led him to visit the Bauhaus where he saw experiments in the design of light fittings. This led to him working for a year for the French lighting company of Bagues in Paris. He then took up the directorship of Troughton & Young (Lighting) Ltd in 1925, where Ernest Race worked under him for a year. He also designed the central chandelier and all other lighting for the Royal Pavilion at the 1951 Festival of Britain.
