Sistrah P5, Bauhaus Pendant Lamp by C.F. Otto Mueller, 1930s

About the Item

Rare 1930s German Art Deco lamp designed by Otto Müller for Sistrah Leuchten. Otto Müller's designs were a new concept in lighting. This lamp consists of a total of seven elements, five of which are glass inserts. The stepped bowl holds 3 glass diffusers at different heights and diffuses the light inside the lamp, giving off a very diffuse and pleasantly warm light. 1930s - Made in Germany Dimensions: 48 cm diameter Material: Mouth blown opaline glass History: The Sistrah lamp principle is based on the developments of C.F. Otto Müller in 1931 in cooperation with the Lichttechnisches Institut of the TH Karlsruhe. This innovation was introduced to the market in 1932 under the claim of the greatest possible brightness and absolute freedom from glare with extremely rational use of energy (electricity). A "universal Luminaire" that enables the user to cover a wide range of lighting problems with a small number of types. The design of glass bodies and metal parts was convincing not only at that time, but also today with functional clarity in the spirit of Bauhaus developments. The hand blown glass is combined strictly according to the lighting requirements of different types of glass: Crystal clear glass, opal flashed glass and crystal satin glass. The original use of Sistrah luminaires in the first decades, in accordance with the objective of a "universal Luminaire", ranged from store lighting to the illumination of restaurants, offices and lighting for manufacturing plants, schools and lecture halls, to outdoor luminaires and the versions as dentist and surgery luminaires. The Sistrah principle was patented in Germany and several European countries. The "Megaphos" brand was also used for export. Sistrah and Megaphos have become a byword for sophisticated lighting.
