About the Item
We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely ornately carved wood Chinese panel depicting six bats and a mirror plate in the middle
One of my favourite decorative motifs on furniture and furnishings is those which carry the bat. Associated with vampires and haunted houses in Western literature, in China, bats are a symbol of happiness and good fortune. Even so, bats can still bring their share of bad luck.
Practitioners of Feng Shui advise that casino interiors incorporate a decorative bat wing pattern to encourage gamblers to lose money at the betting tables. While in the west, the arrival of even one bat can throw the house into a panic, Chinese folklore says the more bats, the merrier! The five bats of happiness symbol, or Wu Fu, incorporates a circle of five bats representing long life, riches, health, love and a natural death.
This panel has six bats, two top and bottom and then four around each side of the mirror
The timber has all been cleaned waxed and polished, they will have age related patina marks here and there

Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of cracking creasing and wear, we recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade.
