Norman Mailer/Bert Stern, Marilyn Monroe

About the Item

Three legends. Monroe by Mailer and Stern. We have paired Mailer’s original text (his 1973 biography Marilyn) with Bert Stern’s extraordinary photographs, widely considered the most intimate ever taken of Monroe to create a fitting tribute to the woman who, at the time of her death in 1962, was the world’s most famous, a symbol of glamour and eroticism for an entire generation. But though she was feted and adored by her public, her private life was that of a little girl lost, desperate to find love and security. Mailer’s Marilyn is beautiful, tragic, and complex. As Mailer reflects upon her life, from her bleak childhood through to the mysterious circumstances of her death, she emerges as a symbol of the bizarre decade during which she reigned as Hollywood’s greatest female star. This book, conceived by Lawrence Schiller, Mailer’s collaborator on five works, combines the author’s masterful text with Stern’s penetrating images of the 36-year-old Marilyn. Photographed for Vogue magazine over three days at the Bel-Air Hotel, Marilyn had never allowed such unfettered access, nor had she looked so breathtakingly beautiful. Six weeks later, mysteriously, she was dead. In this bold synthesis of literary Classic and legendary portrait sitting, Mailer and Stern lift the veils of confusion surrounding Monroe, the woman, the star, the sex symbol and offer profound insight into an iconic figure whose true personality remains an enigma even today. Translations of Mailer’s text are available in German (the translation dates from 1992) and now for the first time in Spanish and French. Limited to a total of 1,962 numbered copies signed by Bert Stern, this book is available as Collector’s Edition (No. 251-1,962), and also in two Art Editions of 125 copies each (No. 1-250). The author: Norman Mailer (1923–2007) was one of the 20th century’s greatest and most influential writers, as well as one of America’s most renowned and controversial literary figures. The best-selling author of a dozen novels and 20 works of nonfiction, he also wrote stage plays, screenplays, television miniseries, hundreds of essays, two books of poetry, and a collection of short stories. A two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, he lived in Brooklyn, New York and Provincetown, Massachusetts. The photographer: Bert Stern (1929–2013) was one of America’s greatest portrait photographers, who during the 1960s produced 200 pages annually for Vogue, as well as many of the most important print and television advertising campaigns. He is best known for his revolutionary print ads for Smirnoff and for his portrait series of Marilyn Monroe, taken just six weeks before her death. Stern lived and worked in New York City.

  • Inez van Lamsweerde/Vinoodh Matadin, Pretty Much Everything
By Inez van Lamsweerde, Vinoodh Matadin, M/M Paris
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
Two artists, one vision. The enigmatic and genre-defying work of Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. “It is typical of the photographic art of van Lamsweerde and Matadin that they urge their image making to de-stabilize the pristine surfaces expected of consumer culture; to this end they make use, in turn, of the Gothic, inscrutability, androgyny, comedy, eroticism, surrealism, fantasy, montage, cinema, replication, image manipulation, Pop Art, fetishism and art historical nuance.” —Michael Bracewell, from the introduction Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin’s work has graced the walls and pages of some of the world’s finest galleries and fashion magazines, and if it is surprising that their photographs easily float between these worlds, it is by Virtue of their ease in creating imagery that seeks homes in both culturally elite and mainstream outlets. For some of their photographs, such as their portrait of Bjo¨rk or Campaign for Givenchy, van Lamsweerde and Matadin have worked in collaboration with the art directors M/M (Paris), who have also designed this sumptuous two-volume retrospective set that looks back at “pretty much everything” that the photographers have been working on for over two decades and has brought them to the forefront in the fields of both art and fashion. Limited Collector’s Edition of 1,000 copies, each numbered and signed by the artists. Two-volume retrospective with 666 photographs of “pretty much everything” that the photographers have been working on for over two decades. Additional reader with interviews and texts about the photographic œuvre of Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. Entire set designed by the artists’ longtime collaborators M/M (Paris) and includes original silkscreened poster, origami-folded over the top corner of the slipcase. Also available in two Art Editions of 100 copies each including two signed and numbered photographic prints. The designer: Established in Paris in 1992, M/M (Paris) is an art and design partnership consisting of Mathias Augustyniak and Michael Amzalag.
