Rare & Skillfully Crafted Pair of Patinated Brass, Alchemist Sculpture Bookends
About the Item
Striking early 20th century bookends with maker's mark.
Since mediëval times alchemy has been part of virtually all cultures around the globe. The artist who created these stunning bookends must have been inspired by the archetypes of alchemists who are always depicted as older men desperately and continuously looking for answers how to prolong (their) life and/or how to turn metal into gold. These two alchemists too are totally preoccupied with what they are reading and with what they are hoping to uncover. We are certain there is a spiritual lesson to be learned from this way of spending one's time. Artists usually incorporate such themes in their work. The quality of their body posture, the perfect way in which their clothes are draped around their bodies, their strong hands and the intensity with which these aged men are fully focused are all details that reveil the skills of the artist. He left his monogram on the side of these bookends, but unfortunately we cannot decifer it. Apart from the deeper meaning, the true quality, the practicality (because of their weight), the great condition and the marvelous, bronze patina there is one more feature that makes these bookends extra rare. They are made of a relatively thin layer of patinated brass and they seem to be totally filled with plaster. If there was not a tiny hole in the bottom of one of them through which we can see the plaster, we would have never known, because the quality is amazing and they also have the weight of solid brass bookends. If you like these rare and great quality, alchemist bookends from the 1920's as much as we do then you will love our price. Especially when taken into account that perfect packing & worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 days are complimentary.
