Early and Rare Evert Sodergren Sculptured Chair, circa 1955

About the Item

The 'Sculptured' chair was originally designed in 1953 by Pacific Northwest master craftsman and cabinetmaker, Evert Sodergren, and it is the crown jewel of his oeuvre which spanned over 60 years. Part of the first wave of the American Studio Craft Movement along with George Nakashima and Arthur Espenet Carpenter, Sodergren was arguably the most seminal figure in the movement's Pacific Northwest region. Executed in solid walnut with ebony inlay along the legs, seat and arm supports, this chair is one of the earliest examples made (dating to the mid 1950s) as evidenced by the downward arched stretcher beneath the seat and the lack of ebony tips at the feet which were part of later productions. The black Naugahyde is all original with the old, original tacks to the underside. The backrest pivots and its brass hardware was also hand-crafted by Sodergren. This is an exquisite and rare example of American studio furniture in beautiful condition. Very few find their way to market. Sodergren’s furniture designs are included in collections at the Boston Museum of Fine Art and the Museum of Art and Design in New York, with the Sculptured chair at the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery.
