About the Item

Set of number four chairs in walnut wood seat in leather designer Afra & Tobia Scarpa from the 70s. Son of architect and designer Carlo Scarpa, Tobia Scarpa was born in Venice on January 1, 1935. Graduating in 1957 with his future wife and colleague Afra Bianchin from the Iuav University of Venice, Tobia worked as a glass designer at the Murano Venini glassworks from 1957 to 1961, before opening a design office with Bianchin in Montebelluna, Italy[3]. In 1960 they had their first collaboration with Gavina, for whom they designed the Bastiano armchair, the Pigreco chair, and the metal bed Vanessa. The latter was reissued in 2005 by Cassina in the SimonCollection, like the other furniture once produced by Simon. Later they designed for B&B Italia the Coronado and Erasmo armchairs, for Cassina the Soriana armchairs, Compasso d'oro in 1970, and 925, and for Meritalia, the Libertà chair, exhibited at the Louvre[4]. From 1960 they became, together with Castiglioni architects, designers at Flos[4]. In 1964 they collaborated with the Benetton clothing company to design the company's first textile factory. The Scarpa couple designed several Benetton stores around the world, including one in Freiburg, Paris and New York[3]. In 1973 they designed the Papillona lamp for Flos, one of the first to use halogen technology[3]. The two also later worked for Fabbian, with the Saturnina and Galeto lamps, and for Veas, with the Scandola metal lamp[1]. Since 2017 he has been a member of the scientific committee, with A. Ferlenga and M. Petranzan, of the architecture series "Obliqua Imagines," directed by Silvia Cattiodoro. For his work he has received numerous awards including the Compasso d'oro and the IF Industrie Forum Design Hannover in 1992. Some objects designed by Scarpa are exhibited in the world's most important museums: including the Libertà chair at the Louvre in Paris[5]. Scarpa, from 2004 to 2007, again with Bianchin, participated in the restoration of historic Italian palaces, including the Palazzo della Ragione in Verona[6]. Since 2002, Scarpa has taught in the Department of Design at the IUAV University of Venice[7].
