Pair of beechwood chairs with straw seat in the style of Charlotte Perriand

About the Item

Pair of beechwood chairs with straw seat in the style of Charlotte Perriand Charlotte Perriand was inspired by the Japanese rice straw designs. She uses the look of their mino, a rain cape, for her woven creations like the seats of the chairs. This model is the "Dordogne" chair. Charlotte Perriand, French architect and designer is known for her iconic modern furniture. A colleague of Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Jean Prouvé, Perriand collaborated with them early in her career. Her series of tubular steel chairs was critically acclaimed, as was her innovative design of the chaise longue. Born on 24 October 1903 in Paris, Perriand studied at the École de l'Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs from 1920 to 1925. She shared Le Corbusier's philosophy of domestic space, which fully integrates each component into a whole, and developed ideas for prefabrication and the flexible use of space. Using new industrial materials and technologies, natural components with traditional processes, Perriand revolutionised the appearance of 20th century interior design. She was a major figure in the history of modernity, linked to the European, Japanese and Brazilian avant-gardes, she contributed to putting modern advances at the service of the greatest number. Her style is "a constant and sincere search for a modern art of living". She died on 27 October 1999 in Paris at the age of 96.

  • Set of 4 Oak Chairs with White Fabric Seat by René Gabriel, 1950s
    By Rene Gabriel
    Located in PARIS, FR
Set of 4 oak chairs with white fabric seat by René Gabriel, 1950s René Gabriel (1899 - 1950) is a precursor of French industrial design. He was one of the first to create, as early as the 1930s, economical mass-produced furniture combining aestheticism, robustness and sobriety, a source of inspiration for a whole generation of future designers. A student at the Germain Pilon School and then at the National School of Decorative Arts, René Gabriel began as a domino maker by designing and producing his own wallpapers, and then made his mark as a decorative artist in most of the salons and international exhibitions of the inter-war period. In 1927, he began his research into the creation of mass-produced furniture and proposed a piece of furniture composed of juxtaposable and superposable elements. He studied an economical version that he presented in 1934 at the Salon des arts ménagers under the name of RG elements. Another major turning point came in 1944, when the Ministry of Reconstruction and Urban Planning commissioned him to create emergency furniture. A fervent advocate of furniture for all, René Gabriel designed numerous models for disaster victims by establishing close ties with industry. He also collaborated with Auguste Perret...
