X4 is an ongoing series of simple graphic forms that create timeless and enduring designs. The handcraft wooden pieces sits somewhere between furniture, object and sculpture. The contrast of the minimalistic shapes and traditional craft, goes beyond the object’s functionality. With different influences like the graphic Bauhaus Art and the playful Memphis Design group, both iconic designers that combined functionality with a focus on simplicity and bold, modern shapes. The pieces are purposefully ambiguous, sitting just as happily in a domestic space as in an art gallery. The designs start as a 2D composition that we translate to a 3D object. The dominant black contours still gives a flat silhouette and different perspectives. Black can swallow light, or make thinks look sharp. Each design is handmade by Jordi Verbaan, where he starts with selecting carefully individual boards, matched for colour, grain pattern and structural integrity. The use of traditional joinery methods maximizes strength, allows for seasonal wood movement and are intended to stand the test of time. All pieces are finished by hand with the traditional ebonizing wood process and hard wax oil. Jordi Verbaan designer, artistic artisan woodworker born in 1989 in Zoetermeer Solange Frankort designer, conceptual artist born in 1988 in Maastricht both lives and works in Rotterdam In the port, in the far west of Rotterdam, you’ll find Jordi Verbaan and Solange Frankort working on their functional as well as artistic furniture. Pieces of furniture that are not directly telling you how to be used. Are they meant be seated upon? Or meant to be a table? But you know what? It can be both. Why not put it in room as a showpiece? Verbaan and Frankort make a remarkable couple. Him being an artisanal furniture maker, her having a background in conceptual art. He can spend hours looking for the right color of wood and the perfect grain, she goes her way with graphical elements of Bauhaus and Memphis. The duo makes all the pieces by hand, finishing them up carefully with traditional ebonizing wood process and hard wax oil.
