About the Item

The contemporary 'Ripples' chest of drawers by Edward Johnson forms part of his Ripples Collection. Inspired by the action of a stone dropping into water, the principal intention was to produce a surface that could replicate the fluidity of water with solid materials, whilst creating elegant, clean and flowing forms which allow the materials to provide the detail. This chest of drawers is made to order and is a limited-edition of 5. The Ripples chest of drawers won the Wood Awards in 2013 (bespoke furniture category). The Wood Awards is the UK’s premier award for excellence in design in wood. The judges (John Makepeace, Rod Wales, Katie Walker & Sean Sutcliffe) described the piece as ‘… an excellent mix of restraint and flamboyance; exuberant in design yet restrained in practice. It is timely that ash is used in a context of luxury to make such an extraordinary object.’ The chest of drawers is shown here in ash, with walnut, ash and cedar drawers. Each of the twelve handcut dovetailed drawers open with the slightest touch, sliding with ease and releasing the aroma of the cedar lined interior. The chest of drawers can be made in a range of different timbers, for example, oak, brown oak and bog oak. Please get in contact to discuss your options. Edward Johnson’s unique maker’s mark is inlaid into the chest of drawers. Dated and hallmarked by The Goldsmiths’ Company assay office (UK); this solid silver maker’s mark adds an elegant finishing touch. Perhaps made more poignant, as it is finely etched with Edward’s fingerprint, a legacy to the craftsman’s touch. Dimensions: 140cm (W) x 95cm (H) x 45cm (D).
