Late 19th Century Table, Writing Desk, Hand Carved Walnut, Testolini & Salviati

About the Item

Late 19th century table, writing desk, in hand carved walnut, by Testolini & Salviati. The important desk is all in solid walnut, with a veneered top. Neoclassical legs with 4 lions carved to remember the symbol of the famous Republic of Venice, where it was conceived and produced by the famous Testolini Atelier "From OADI, observatory for the decorative arts in Italy. N. 14 December 2016" The Testolini1 Brothers saw their birth in Venice in 1847. The company grew and became strong their position in the market in a period of enormous cultural and productive ferment for the lagoon capital Venice. The reputation of the company grew thanks to the partnership established with the company since the dawn Antonio Salviati, founded in London in 1866 by Antonio Salviati, the diplomat Sir Austen Henry Layard and the historian William Drake8. This bond was further strengthened in 1896, when for a period of economic stagnation the Salviati, the Testolini, the Jesurum and other smaller companies operating in Venice, decided to merge under the name of Salviati & Co. Jesurum Important to note is that, although formally Testolini the Brothers see disappear from the header your name, the latter from that year is still reported in all commercial guides just below the principal name, with the specification of their production of artistic furniture, given that further shows how the company and its activities were important.

19th Century French Renaissance writing table ~ student desk is a remarkable example of the furniture maker's craft, performed on a diminutive scale perfect for townhomes, apartments, libraries, studies, and a student's bedroom! Created entirely from old growth oak, it was literally designed to last for centuries. A single steel pendant pull for the drawer is the only other material used. Hand-carved bas relief covers the entire half-bullnose bevel around the perimeter, underneath a subtle ogee bevel surrounding the solid plank top. Another tier of ogee trim in reverse appears under the carved edging, and that's just the surface! The apron is a marvel of wood sculpting, with elaborate scrollwork and stylized naturalistic foliates in glorious full relief appearing on all four facades, framed by amazingly lifelike full relief busts...
