Nadie Jenatzy, coffee table, etched brass, Belgium, circa 1980 This refined brass coffee table is on the edge between sculpture and functional table. The rectangular top with vividly etched lines seems to float above the base. A frame of closely etched lines surrounds a part with more apart, dynamic lines. Here the artist’s signature ‘Jenatzi’ is placed. The technique that she used is acid-etched brass in order to create an unique pattern, emphasizing the expressiveness of the design and structuring the surface. Nadie Jenatzy (1943-2004) was the wife of sculptor, engraver, antiquarian, mineralogist, decorator Armand Jonckers (1939). They worked together and also as artists apart. Jonckers graduated at Fine Arts in Lausanne in 1957 and opened his own workshop shortly afterwards. Upon graduating, he embarked on a number of creative endeavors: dealing in antiques, studying mineralogy, collecting gems and decorating residences and boutiques, including the clothing shop Lollipop, two Saudi Arabian palaces and the club Le Fashion, a favorite of the Paris elite. From here, he began designing furniture, much of which reused vintage objects and materials. Jonckers evidences a style that some have referred to as baroque with a touch of humor. Although his sought-after works include the monumental tables and coffee tables in the hotel salons, he has never had a formal gallery show.
