Original Vintage Art Deco Poster for Air Bleu Poste Aerienne Rapide Air Mail

About the Item

Original vintage advertising poster for the express air delivery service by Air Bleu poste aerienne rapide. Fantastic Art Deco design by the French artist Roger Chapelet (1903-1995) featuring a plane flying at speed over a route map of France with air mail letters marked Par Avion below the stylized title text diagonally across the image set against a blue background. The French airline company Air Bleu offered daily airmail services in France from 1935-1940; due to financial issues and military duties, ownership of the fleet was transferred to Air France and the company was dissolved in 1940. Very good condition, minor tears and staining on margins, backed on linen.

    Original Vintage boating poster for the Paris boat show dating from 1950 by Roger Chapelet. Roger Chapelet - September 25th 1931 - June 30th 1995) was a French marine painter and poster artist. Roger Chapelet’s career as a maritime painter began when he boarded the Rollon in 1927 and painted a series of paintings of different European ports: Le Havre, Antwerp, Rotterdam. Later he embarked on sailboats and painted the fishing campaigns off the banks of Newfoundland and Greenland. In the 1930s, he became the poster artist for the main French maritime companies and in 1936 was appointed Peintre de la Marine (Official Painter to the Navy) and was a member of the Académie de Marine (see below). The ocean liner companies included: Compagnie de Navigation Mixte, Paquet, Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, and Fraissinet. Along with Marin-Marie and Albert Brenet, Roger Chapelet is considered one of the three great French marine painters of the 20th century. An exhibition was dedicated to him at the National Maritime Museum from October 8, 1993 to December 5, 1994. Académie de Marine The title of Official Painter to the Navy (POM) is granted by the French Minister of Defense to artists who have devoted their talent to the sea, to the National Navy and to seafarers. It can be awarded not only to painters but also to photographers, filmmakers, illustrators, engravers, and sculptors. The Academy of Marine Painters exists since 1830 and it’s members can put an anchor after their signature. This poster is for the 16th International Nautical Show which was held Cours Albert 1er in between the Pont des Invalides and the Pont de l’Alma in Paris from the 30th September to 15 October 1950.
