Three Original Polo Paintings by George Rowlandson

About the Item

A Polo triptych by George Rowlandson. A rare set of three original polo watercolours (gouache*), each signed with the initials 'G.D.R.' A single original oak frame with a oak triple aperture mount with original polo art work by George Derville Rowlandson (1861-1928). The sizes shown are for the mount size and the whole frame. Each original George Rowlandson polo watercolour measures 10 ¼ inches high by 7 ¾ inches wide. Rowlandson was an equestrian painter born in 1861 in Madras, India as the son of Colonel George Rowlandson. He returned to his English homeland to study art in Gloucester, Westminster and with trips to Paris to broadened his horizons. He contributed to 'The Illustrated London News' and 'The English Illustrated Magazine' and was proficient in both oils and watercolours. *Gouache is a type of paint consisting of pigment suspended in water. Gouache differs from watercolor in that the particles are larger, the ratio of pigment to water is much higher, and an additional, inert, white pigment such as chalk is also present. This makes gouache heavier and more opaque, with greater reflective qualities.
