Early 19th Century Asian Silver Belt, China 1830s

Offered here is an early 19th century Asian silver belt of tightly-woven flat dense geometric mesh embellished with a crisscross design of tiny floral studs. The large rectangular curved buckle is flanked by two large gold-washed elongated panels, with seven intermittent stations along the length of the belt. The buckle and panels are deeply embossed with elaborate Asian scenes of figures in nature, and there are multiple Chinese hallmarks on the reverse of all pieces. The embossed scenes are elaborate and expressive and meticulously rendered. This belt was obtained from the estate of Edwards Huntington Metcalfe, the last direct heir of Henry Huntington; he and his wife Jane (of the San Francisco society King family) traveled extensively in the Orient in the 1930s, and this was presumably acquired at that time. There is an intricate method for adjusting the length of the belt with a screw element on one panel & a swivel hook on the other. This is a singular artisan-crafted work of art of exceptional beauty, equally at home on a ravishing couture gown or a casual pair of jeans; it is, quite simply, a spectacular piece of wearable art. Dimensions: buckle, 2"L x 2.5"W.; panels, 3.5"L x 1.5"W; stations, 1.25"L x 1.5"W. Length is adjustable up to 34"L, currently 32"L.
