About the Item
Sterling Silver Floral and Leaf Decorated Sash Belt Buckle, c1840. The design work of stylized flowers and shells is crisp and has a beautiful patina. The center has a place for initials but has never been engraved. The buckle is marked with a patent number. There has been no repairs.
These buckles are normally worn with a black Petersham belt. Petersham ribbon, also called Petersham facing or simply Petersham, is a thick, stiff, flexible corded ribbon usually made out of either cotton, rayon, or wool.
