Piel Frères c.1900 Gilt Metal, Enamel and Glass Scarab Design Antique Buckle

About the Item

Featuring an evocative Egyptian Revival design, this rare and special buckle by the renowned Piel Frères dates from the early 1900s. Condition Report: Very Good - A tiny scuff to the enamel work in one small area. This is only apparent upon close inspection and does not detract from the overall appeal of the piece. The Details... This buckle is constructed from gilded metal. It features a scarab design - the wings are detailed with a pale green and cream enamel and the body is molded glass coloured to resemble Mother of Pearl. The buckle is also detailed with two round, turquoise glass cabochons. The buckle is signed - the reverse is stamped 'PF' with a sword motif in between the letters. The buckle measures 7cm x 6cm. A Short History... The work of the Parisian Piel Frères is highly sought after. They were amongst the most important costume jewellers of the Belle Époque era, with their work embodying the aesthetic trends of the time and incorporating newly pioneered materials, such as celluloid, that were being designed to make stylish jewellery affordable. Piel Frères caused a sensation at the Paris International Exhibition in 1900. Perhaps this beautiful buckle was one of the pieces they displayed there? Wear it With... This buckle is a dream collectors piece. Display it on a dressing table with other jewels and accessories of note or, perhaps, wear it as a pendant suspended from a secure chain.
