Antique Victorian Chinese Embroidered Fringe Shawl Valance

About

We are not sure if this piece was meant to be worn as a shawl or if it was made as a more decorative item such as a bed valance. It was purchased in France at an auction where the previous owners had displayed it on a rod as a piece of embroidery art on the wall. We have left the small rings attached which have been sewn on for such display. They could be easily removed if you choose to wear this as a shawl or have it made up into something else. We were told it dates from the mid to late Victorian period. The condition is fantastic. The silk is supple and luxurious and there are no obvious stains holes, tears nor repairs. The fringe is a touch tangled and there is a subtle soiling line along the top where it was folded for display and got dusty, both of these either reversible or so minor it doesn't matter. This didn't photograph but we are mentioning it for full disclosure. A gorgeous piece either draped on the wall, across the back of a couch or across your body.
