Ottoman fabric is characterized by wide horizontal, flat and slightly spaced stripes (each cm has 3 to 10 ribs).
It is obtained by alternating the gros weft with the taffeta one, using thin and dense warp threads, which intertwine two different types of wefts: a thinner one that will appear on the right side of the fabric and the other more full-bodied that will remain to form the padding internal.
Its name derives from Osman I, progenitor of the first dynasty of the Turco-Ottomans, a people who left Asia Minor and later settled in Anatolia, building along their path a vast empire that included Eastern, North African and Balkan territories.
In their official residence in Istanbul they owned textile factories for the production of precious fabrics for the court and its family members marked with the sultan's mark.
Ottoman can be made with silk, wool, rayon and cotton. It is mainly used in the making of outerwear or elegant dresses, but also in decorative elements.
