About

Jay Thorpe ,an exclusive store located in New York, offered custom made clothing from French and in-house designers. The store was on an equal footing with Henri Bendel and Hattie Carnegie in terms of quality, but had a more eclectic image. Private fashion showings took place in the fourth floor bistro, where customers could relax with refreshments while watching models stroll by in latest fashions. This ivory-crème ethereal silk-net gown from the "Old Hollywood" era of glamour is a beautiful example of this store's allure. The bodice is a low-cut plunge with sparkling beadwork, metallic embroidery and micro-sequins throughout. The waist is nipped with a stylized bias-cut construction. The lower skirt has pleated inserts which is insanely hard to do on bias-cut fabric. This figure flattering garment accentuates the bust, skims the hip and flares out below the knee in a Grecian goddess style. It is impeccably seamed and on the level of modern day couture. Here is a dress with attitude and elegant.

This antique evening dress is in excellent wearable condition with no rips or holes. Perfectly working side metal-zipper. All embellishments are intact. After close inspection I found some aging to the silk-net color which is part of the nature patina. This piece is over 70 years old and is truly spectacular.
