1940s Henri Bendel Black Velvet Evening Gown with Dolman Sleeves + Lace Insert

About the Item

This formal evening gown is labeled Henri Bendel and was likely manufactured sometime in the 1940s. Henri Bendel was an upscale retailer which opened in Greenich Village in 1895 and was one of the first retailers to sell Coco Chanel designs in the USA. Many high end designers were discovered by Geraldine Sturtz, who was president of Henri Bendel from the 1950s through the 1980s. Made from what we believe is silk velvet (no content tag), this piece features a velvet-covered button front bodice with cuffed Dolman sleeves, a wide lace insert at the center front of the skirt, and a slight train in the back. Very chic style and construction. This piece is unlined with the exception of matching fabric underneath the lace skirt panel. Condition report (please read carefully): This rare dress is in good condition overall and is wearable - however it has issues which should be addressed: 1. We found two holes, each just slightly smaller than a dime, that have been poorly patched with velvet (see image 8); one patch is located on the wearer's right front hip area and the other patch is located on the wearer's right back hip area. If we were keeping this dress, we'd consult with an experienced seamstress to repair these holes properly. There are also a few tiny holes (as in pin head size) but these are hard to see unless holding up to light. One sleeve cuff has a small tear that needs repair. 2. The front lace shows some discoloration towards the bottom and wear to the edge of the hem (see image 8). The fabric underneath the lace shows several holes and stains. 3. This piece has string belt loops but no belt. No size tag, but we're estimating this as a modern size M, based on these measurements: shoulders - 16.5in, bust - 37in, waist - 28in, hips - 39in, sleeves - 20in, length - 55in at longest, in back.
