1950s Worth London Couture Brown Lace and Pink Sheath Dress

About the Item

A superb 1950s couture sheath dress from Worth London, in a striking combination of pale pink satin silk and brown lace. The slip underlay is designed in a luxurious soft rose pink silk with chocolate brown chiffon trim and is accessed from the rear with a central fastening zip. The lace overlay has a simple rounded neckline and capped sleeves, also with an original metal zip closure running down the back. The lace is made up of a delicate floral pattern in the same shade of brown as the trim on the underskirt. This dress, although unlabelled, can confidently be attributed to the house of Worth whose London operations were run from an atelier on Grosvenor Street from 1911. We purchased a large collection of couture dresses bearing both Paquin and Worth labels from descendants of the family who ran the House from 1952 - 1956. A beautifully understated occasion wear dress and versatile enough to be worn either night or day. In impeccable vintage condition, with no stains or flaws to note. The pink satin slip has been professionally let out at some point but only seen by a trained eye! It would best fit up to a 8-10 UK, or 4- 6 US. MEASUREMENTS Bust - 36 in. (91.3 cm) Waist - 32 in. (81.3 cm) Hip - 38 in. (96.5 cm) Length - 36 in. (91.4 cm) Shoulders - 14.5 in. (36.8 cm)

  • 1960s Jean Muir Silk Liberty Floral Print Dress with Scarf
    By Jean Muir
    Located in London, GB
This is a fine Jean Muir 1960s dress and matching tassel scarf and is without question, the best ensemble from this designer we have ever had in our collection. Early in her career, Muir worked with Liberty fabric and this striking psychedelic silk print could certainly be a Liberty design. It features a riot of bright purple, blue, orange, pink and green tones in a stylised paisley print. Each of the designs, contained in long rows of bands, is slightly different. The dress is a high shirtwaister design with an empire line bust, a low scoop neck and it fastens at the front with 18 fabric buttons and loops. There is a little upturned ruffle on the waistband and the skirt is gently gathered. The sleeves have a gathered cuff and upturned ruffle that echoes the waistline. The dress bodice is not lined; however, the skirt is lined in a quality pink viscose. Labelled a UK size 12, this is small in today's sizing and probably a better fit for a UK 8-10 or US 4-6. The accompanying scarf is a double thickness triangular shape with a row of hand tied purple tassels down one side. It is doubled sided with one print matching the dress while the other side is the same design but in a different colourway, focusing on blues, turquoises and orange. It's an absolutely beautiful piece worn alone or could could be styled either side to compliment or contrast the dress colourway. A very rare set indeed to find in superb vintage condition and from the very earliest part of Jean Muir's career. One for the serious collector, wearer of fine boho...
