Harald Rose Pink Dress with Appliqued Flowers

About the Item

A short strapless rose pink cocktail dress by London society couturier Harald which includes an optional underskirt in order to transform it into a tiered full-length gown. Constructed from a textured polyester chiffon with a slight sheen, the cocktail dress features a softly layered appliqued flower on the fitted bust with a stem and leaves running down the centre of the garment. Additional features include an oversized bow detail and zip on the back and a soft pale pink lining. The accompanying slim two-tone skirt features a pale pink silk upper panel and can be worn underneath the dress in order to transform it into a striking full-length tiered sheath. From 1936 until his death in 1994, London-based German couturier Harald provided couture garments for clients including Princess Margaret, Dame Margot Fonteyn and socialite Barbara Hutton. He often produced licensed copies of other leading couturiers’ work and this dress is believed to be based upon the style of a similar 1960s Pierre Cardin pink cocktail dress. Good vintage condition; the dress has some mild fraying under both arms and on the front, staining on the reverse of the flower and light discolouration to the front that is hardly noticeable. The underskirt lining has some light age discolouration that is completely covered when worn with the dress. Measurements are for the full length first: Length: 43/28.5; Bust: 22; Waist: 28; Hips: 40/37(underskirt) --- Provenance: Miranda Macmillan (née Quarry) - The Countess of Stockton Born in 1947, Miranda Louise Quarry is the stepdaughter of Lord Mancroft. A rebel by nature, Miranda blazed a nonconformist trail through a series of boarding schools and by her late teens, on the advice of a psychiatrist, she left schooling permanently and travelled to Barcelona, which marked the beginning of her peripatetic life. During her travels around Europe in the 60s, she fully embraced the worlds of art, dance, fashion and music. It was during this time that she met her first husband, the late great comedic acting legend Peter Sellers. Although a brief marriage (1971-1974), she has always maintained fond memories of her time with him stating that, ‘It was a privilege to have spent as much time as I did with Peter. He was one of the kindest and most generous people who ever walked this earth’. Miranda began to build her extensive collection of couture garments during her marriage to Sellers, purchasing couture from historic Parisian houses such as Dior and Givenchy as well as from the British designers of the moment, including Ossie Clark and Zandra Rhodes.
