Vintage Sander Witlin Couture Velvet Bodice Harlequin Silk Gown
About the Item
This vintage Sander Witlin couture gown is a truly one-of-a-kind work of art. Sander Witlin began his career as a fine artist, working in New York for about twenty years as an artist and illustrator, before starting formally designing clothing in about 1980. His pieces were mostly one-off couture designs, catering to public figures and specific clientele in the entertainment industry. From 1986 to 2001, he had a salon on Madison Avenue where he worked with his clients. Indeed, this dress was likely custom-made for one of those very clients. Circa late 1980s/early 1990s, it's reminiscent of many Givenchy couture pieces from this era. The workmanship is so evident in every detail: the silk fabric is not screenprinted; the fabric is actually woven with the various colors, to create the checkered Harlequin pattern. Note how the squares perfectly line up at the side seams— true couture craftsmanship. Horsehair at the hem, trimmed with velvet, adds structure to the fullness of the skirt— and beautiful movement. The slightly drop-waist velvet bodice is boned on the sides for a fitted look, and adorned with a velvet bow. I love how the pleating at the back shoulders creates the perfect cap sleeve shape. The bodice is fully lined and the skirt has a gauzy layer underneath to create fullness. It could also be worn with crinoline under for an even fuller-skirt look. Fiber contents are not listed as it was a custom piece but the skirt is silk and the bodice is silk-velvet. Closes with a zipper and hook in back.
