1940s Japanese Colorful Floral Printed Silk Kimono Jacket

About the Item

While the variety and particularity of kimono types can be complex, the cut of a kimono is intentionally simple. Minimal seaming allows the beauty of the fabric to reveal itself unencumbered by darts and tucks. A kimono has geometric unity in its use of uncut narrow-width fabric, which forms all elements. This short version dates to the 1940s, and is made from rinzu, a type of silk that is first woven in a damask pattern and then ornamented with a dye-based pattern. The sharp radial pattern of this damask contrasts beautifully with the organic chrysanthemum pattern that overlays it. A richly saturated purple sets of the white flora, which is highlighted with occasional yellow blossoms. The neckline and center front opening are edged with a generous band of silk, providing a comfortable and flattering fit. Three-quarter length sleeves have dramatic drops extending down to hip level. The kimono is lined in an equally charming rinzu silk with large blooms over a cream ground, making the interior something akin to a delightful secret.
