About the Item
A Matthew Barney Cremaster 2 long sleeve t-shirt, circa 1999. This incredibly rare t-shirt was made in a limited edition for the 'Cremaster 2: The Drones' Exposition' film exhibit at the Walker Art Center.
Both sides of the garment prominently feature the artist's iconic insignia named the 'Field Emblem'. This symbol—an ellipse with a horizontal line bisecting it—is recurring in all five films and represents the artist's notion of self-imposed restraint over an organic system. The front side displays a modified version of the symbol exclusive to this film consisting of a beehive and two flags—the American and Canadian Red Ensign flag respectively. It is enclosed in a hexagon surrounded by a skull and flames, reminiscent of motorcycle gang aesthetics present in the film. The sleeves bear the exhibition name, while the back displays the artist's name, gallery, and date. Due to the scarcity of Barney's merchandise, this t-shirt is truly an extraordinary find.
