Futuristic Japanese designer Issey Miyake is a master of form and fabric, known for creating beautiful sculptural garments that pay homage to the past while bringing us somewhere new and enchanting. Eschewing the traditional way of constructing garments from pre-pleated fabric, Miyake developed his own method of garment pleating, creating permanent pleats using a heat press after constructing a garment’s desired shape. This technique created remarkable clothes that maintain their shape, may be folded flat, and do not crease. From the S/S 1989 collection, this gorgeous top is an early example of Miyake’s work with pleats. Done in a magnificent ombré pleated fabric that morphs from shades of chartreuse and spring green to mauve and maroon, this top is an ingenious study in color and structure. The one-shoulder design is constructed and draped to perfection, creating a flattering diagonal line from shoulder to hip that is reminiscent of a Grecian gown. The curved neckline offers a beautiful sculptural element that is best appreciated when viewed from the side, giving the eye something new to appreciate from each angle. Size: Medium Bust: up to 38 inches Waist: up to 40 Length: 28 inches front, the back is cut high The top falls from the left shoulder to an asymmetric hem that grazes the upper thigh at the front while the diagonally set pleats establish a pleasing rhythm throughout. Beneath the shoulder, a portion of the fabric extends sideways from the bust in a long, fin-like arc that falls to a point at the left side of the top, creating an Avant-Garde silhouette. The back of the bodice is more fitted and risqué in nature, featuring a high-cut inverted hem that accentuates the natural lines of the body.
