1930s Genuine Alligator Vanity Train Case Lined in Snakeskin w Inserts & Key

About the Item

This exceptional vintage alligator train case once belonged to an elegant Countess who lived in London and Manhattan from the late 1800's through the mid 20th Century. She traveled with Goyard trunks and had nothing but the finest accessories. This case is the nicest one we have ever come across, truly an museum quality piece. The case is uniquely lined in snakeskin and it comes with all of the original felt lined alligator lid compartments that fit neatly into the removable tray. Within the chest on the lid, you will find a 12'' by 7'' mirror and there is a 1'' wide tan leather strap that snakes through the interior of the chest, most likely to hold bottles or jars. It comes with its original canvas cover which was custom made for the bag to protect the alligator skin. The original key comes with its alligator holder. This case would be a perfect jewelry box or a great place to store other prized possessions. Vanity cases have been around for centuries and one was even found in a pharaoh’s tomb with jars of ointment, perfumes, and a hand mirror. Train cases became especially popular in the 1800's when trains became the most common means of transportation. Condition:

Wear consistent with age and use. Overall excellent condition, the skins are supple and were well cared for. The case is missing one of its brass feet and there is minor discoloration to the brass hardware. Some usual desilvering to mirror. The canvas cover of the case shows wear.
