Antique Japanese Bamboo Ikebana Basket of Mingei Style

$2,000

About

A Japanese woven bamboo Ikebana basket, circa 1930s-1950s. The basket was woven with "sooted" bamboo (susutake in Japanese). This bamboo materials was collected from traditional thatched-roof houses that had been exposed to decades of smoke from a hearth or cooking fire, therefore the basket displays a deep rich patina that is hard to attain by color-lacquering. The free-hand mat plaiting technique was used to create a swelled body, in which irregular weaving technique was used to embed many bamboo chunks in a random fashion. The bundled bamboo handles were twisted and tightened with rattan knot on top. The piece exhibits a strong sense of rustic charm, the so called Mingei (Folk Art) style.
