Chinese Monumental Mill Wheel, circa 1900

About the Item

Hewn from pine and held together with iron hardware, this provincial wooden wheel is a remarkable example of turn-of-the-century craftsmanship. Its monumental scale suggests it was used not as a wagon wheel, but as a turning element of a Qing-dynasty mill. The thick outer rim is comprised of nine hand-carved logs, held in place by eighteen wooden spokes connected to a central wheel shaft. Whether mounted as a sculpture or simply leaning against the wall, this monumental wheel is a true show-stopper. Additional Dimensions: Wheel depth: 3".
