Four Iron Pulls by Louis Sullivan

About

These four pulls, made of bronzed iron, were originally affixed to window sashes in the Chicago Stock Exchange, an important milestone in the early development of modernist architecture. Designed by Louis Sullivan father of American Modernism, Pioneer of the skyscraper, inventor of the famous Modernist declaration "Form Follows Function", and mentor of Frank Lloyd Wright and his partner Dankmar Adler in the early 1890s, the Chicago Stock Exchange was sadly torn down in 1972. These iron pulls were salvaged from the still-standing but semi-demolished landmark by the father of the woman I bought them from in Chicago. They are precious surviving components of a once-magnificent historic building, a relic from the very earliest awakening of a Modernist ethos. Each pull measures 7.5" x 1.5" x 2". They were made by the Yale & Towne Manufacturing Company of Stamford, Connecticut. Though designed and used as window pulls, they can also be used as drawer pulls, door handles, etc.
