Often when centuries-old trunks did not survive the passage of time, 19th-century menuisiers (French woodworkers) would salvage the surviving wood and carve new furniture such as desks and similar trunks. The facade was typically the most ornate section of these antique trunks, making intact frontages highly valued antiques. Hand-carved from oak in Picardie, France, circa 1550, this period Gothic architectural is a beautiful example of an antique trunk facade that was not incorporated into a more recent furnishing. Picardie is a former administrative region in northern France that is home to many Gothic cathedrals. Pair of columns of carved pine wood that present the twisted shaft in a helical way (Solomonic) and decorated with interlocks of birds, scrolls, leaves, fruits and birds intermingled and are topped by two Corinthian capitals (with the two levels of leaves under the scrolls more similar to those of oak than to acanthus). Although it was an element used in architecture before, the Solomon column is a more known and habitual piece in the Baroque, especially since its use by Bernini in the canopy of St. Peter's Vatican (completed in 1633). He soon arrived in Spain, being used in Andalusia for the first time circa 1639 and in Madrid in 1636, spreading throughout the peninsula and colonial territories since then. Normally, they were decorated with branches and grape clusters in slight relief. This beautiful section of boiserie has been carved from softwood in the 17th century (upper section pieces only). It has been completely cleaned (stripped) and clear waxed at some point in it's history, and about 15 years ago, the previous owners added the base section (one piece), and backing. The motifs are acanthus leaves in various forms, discs, scrolls and beading. To the sides of the center open section are crowns with ribbons. The one on the left is over an arrangement of irises while the one on the right is over an arrangement of roses. Beneath each is a draped cartouche with roses hanging from the center. Both of these sections are slightly curved inward to the central covered alcove. The opening is curved at the top with the ceiling being flat. Different motifs described above are at the back and the front. A bracket is above this blending into the ceiling molding...
