19th Century Solid Bronze Italian Door Knocker
Located in Dallas, TX
Produced in Italy in the late 1800s, this impressive bronze dore door knocker contains various Classic design elements including putti, a coat of arms, and a large mascaron. Similar door knockers were first produced in Italy during the Renaissance. The large mascaron crest has been crafted in grotesque style and is sometimes called a chimera. A mascaron is an architectural ornamentation, typically a face, that is designed to prevent evil spirits from entering a building. The grotesque style means the face is depicted as a mythical creature, rather than strictly human. This symbolic element was intended to help protect those inside the home. The tongue of the mascaron forms the pivot, while the knocker itself is comprised of two putti supporters holding a coat of arms emblazoned with six roundels. Putti can be traced back to the ancient classical world. They were figures in art that were the physical manifestation of invisible spirits believed to influence humans. Behind the putti are curled leaves whose stems extend towards the stylized ram mascaron that the putti stand on. The ram symbolizes strength, power, and leadership. There is bolt and square washer attached to the back side of the knocker. The bolt would run through a door while the washer tightens on the interior side of the door. Our 19th century bronze dore Italian door knocker...
