Cast Iron Doorstop "Conestoga Covered Wagon" Hubley Manufacturing C0; Circa 1930

About the Item

The iconic "Conestoga Covered Wagon" cast iron doorstop, being pulled by a team of horses, is one of the few western theme doorstops, and is much revered by collectors of western memorabilia, in addition to those who collect doorstops. It was made circa 1930 by the Hubley Manufacturing Company in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Hubley was a very successful company, well known for producing quality cast iron items including children's toys and playthings, coin savings banks, and doorstops. "Conestoga Covered Wagon" doorstop is referenced in the book "Doorstops" published in 1982 by Jeanne Bertoia, on page 170; in addition "The Doorstop Book" published in 2006 by John and Nancy Smith notes it on page 178. This particular example is one of the better ones known and is equal to, or exceeds, the quality of the ones referenced. It is completely all original with no repairs and no repaint or touch-up; it is in bright hand painted colors of a creamish yellow covered wagon with a blue buckboard; and tanned horses; green grass and red highlights complete the color scheme. There is a little bit of paint loss on the ground below the wagon wheels; the rest of the doorstop is in excellent 95% plus paint. On the back, center bottom, is embossed "Hubley 375 2" (see image). Cast iron doorstops and coin savings banks were notoriously reproduced; all authentic examples should have this "Hubley" designation on the back side. It should also be 9 1/2" long, as reproductions will be slightly shorter on the recast than the original manufactured example. "Conestoga Covered Wagon" with it's western theme, is one of the more sought after doorstops in the marketplace, and a wonderful piece of Americana. It's excellent condition makes it even more very desirable and sought after by collectors.. Dimensions. 9 1/2" long x 5 1/4" high x 1 1/2" deep. Note: After 40 plus years of dealing and collecting toys, and cast iron products, I am justly qualified to guarantee and present the authenticity of antique and vintage items and children's playthings; important considering the fakes and reproductions in the marketplace.

    By Hubley Manufacturing Company 2
    Located in Incline Village, NV
This doorstop, also known as "Overhead Swinging Golfer," is more difficult to find than it's "Putting Golfer" counterpart doorstop; which is also made by Hubley. Manufactured by the Hubley Manufacturing Company of Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1920, this cast iron doorstop is in outstanding all original bright paint with no touch up or restoration of any kind, and in wonderful patina. It depicts an older, grey haired man, with typical knicker golf garb, taking a wild swing at a golf ball resting on the grass. It has a semi "hollow" rear with a "238" factory marking, indicating that it is, in fact, by Hubley and original. It is noted in Jeanne Bertoia's 1985 book on doorstops page 60; and referenced on page 211 of the Smith book on doorstops. A must for the doorstop or golfing memorabilia...
